Lots of environmental problems happen because the decisions that impact the land, air and water are made in far-away boardrooms or government offices by people who are not immediately affected by those decisions. In order to secure environmentally sustainable decision making, the local community should have a strong voice at the table.

I agree with you, Anakkritis. the environment effects just about everyone, so everyone should have a say

I agree that local communities should be involved in decisions that effect them. Although I'm not really sure how that can be effectively achieved, as like the question mentions most of the decisions are made far away from the local community itself.

I AGREE FULLY, ENVIRONMENT PLAYS A MAJOR ROLE AND THE LOCAL COMMUNITY MUST DO SOMETHING

I agree-but think that the current political system, which is supposed to be driven by the public, is inaccesible and intimidating to most. The impetus falls on members of the government to intentionally involve communities in decision-making. Looking at federal decision-makers, there are certain Congresspeople that are very good at meeting with their communities and gaining their input. Ryan mentioned he wasn't sure how that could be achieved-it's true! And everyone is affected, so you can't involve everyone who is affected, that would be impossible! But there is a growing movement (check out mobilize.org or everyday-democracy.org) to get communities involved in making decisions collectively on issues that affect them. The more people who get involved with these types of actions, the more our voices will be heard by decision-makers!

Hi,
for instance, in farming it would mean taking care of the soil so that it doesn't become overused, losing it's nutrients and maintain the ability to continue producing crops. using too many fertilizers and pesticides will eventually kill the soil.

This opinion is one that reflect the embedded thought in human. Decision about one, should be made by the one involved.

I definitely agree...however, this is such a vague opinion.  How would you realistically implement this?

It is not that China is ignoring the problem, but that the country’s breakneck GDP growth rate is not only impacting global commodity prices (oil, copper, nickel, uranium, etc), but could also be accelerating the effects of abrupt climate change and global warming.

Suggestions about the clean coal china are mostly welcomed

I think everyone should continuously burn tires in their front yards, throw bleach in the streams, and vote George Bush back into office.

People should help the enviroment. alot of people in small cities don't have recycling bens but they still pick it up but if we don't start picking it up, in about 75-80 years we wont have electricity. and also to prevent this from happeing we can turn off lights when were not in that room, unplug things like: cell phone chargers, lap top chargers, and other things that you can unplug that you don't have to reset unless you want to. umm thats all i have to say ok see ya!!! :) recycle please;) :) thanks!!!!;) and also we have to be strong and hard and make sure your being heard ok now im done see ya!!!;)

we need to speak up and tell people to pick up their trash if they they go to throw it away and they miss it either go tell them to pick it up or oick it up for them cuz once that doesnt get picked up it could accidently get into the river or an animal could think its food and eat it and get sick and die!!!! we nned to help the bees when you see one dont kill it let it go because their population is going down and if they die out half of our food will be gone!!!! so help the eniviroment because if people dont hear us then people wont know about what will happen to us in about 75 to 80 yrs like we wont have any electricity we wont have anything and its gunna be really really scary for some of us like wewont have any cars or anything so tell people tell your friends and if they laugh at you well then you know that they arent a real friend because they dont know whats gunna happen to all of us!!!!!!:( help cause you know its the right thing!;)

This is one of the major flaws with the current political system - the detachment from constituents (mentally as well as physically) and the actual localities concerned. Most politicians don't have a clue what it's really like with a given situation because they don't live it - and hence they may not care very much (but pretend they do). Government needs to become highly decentralized again, not just for the environments sake.

i agree. those pollution around us are man made. it is the fruit of their irresponsibility. if they love there city and country, they wont dump garbage anywhere and start cleaning up instead. they should start being aware of what they do and start contributing good things.:D:D:D

Everyone thinks of changing the world, but no one thinks of changing himself.
