Quantum Shift is a 21st Century storyteller that renews the cultural values of community, care and interconnectedness. Research from the Max Plank Institute in Germany confirms that people are more likely to take action towards sustainability when they are seen to be doing so.

What is the Quantum Shift mission?
To shift this culture from 'me' to 'we' by sharing the news stories of those who positively impact social and environmental sustainability on our planet.
Do you really think focusing on the positive is going to make a difference?
To put it succinctly: YES!
A culture's behavior is based on its values and beliefs, which in turn are based on, and reinforced by, its stories. In today's world, the media is our storyteller. The way in which the media presents news stories shapes the values of our children and teenagers and reinforces those values in adults.
So what happens when traditional newsrooms focus on death, catastrophe, violence, conflict and controversy rather than on the daily stories about success, breakthroughs, the perseverance of the human spirit and the caring in our communities? The public is aware of the impact TV has on our society and especially on children and it is all but positive. The American psychiatric association states, "The debate is over, for the last three decades, the one predominant finding in research on the mass media is that exposure to media portrayals of violence increases aggressive behavior in children." Is that how we want to educate our children? Is that the world we truly want to create?
For those of us at Quantum Shift the answer is a resounding No! and we know we are not alone.

No. And a little bit yes. We admit that similarities exist but at Quantum Shift our focus is different It has, you might say, shifted away from focusing on what is current to focusing on uplifting and inspiring stories of social and environmental change. We think the world - and the world wide web - is big enough for more than one internet TV station.

What if I don't have a camera, can I still be involved?
Of course! We are a fully interactive website and all you have to do is register. You can vote on videos, take part in forum discussions, be part of our contests and take part in our many polls. We suspect it won't be long before you realize you have an inspiring story of your own to tell and will find a way to tell it.

Where are the Quantum Shift offices?
They don't exist. We are truly a 21st Century company in that we have people working from their homes all over the place and no one office that everyone has to drive to everyday.

You will! When you submit your video you will also need to submit a list of sources.

Do I need to get releases from the people in my video?
The short answer is "yes." If you're shooting a big crowd, you don't need a release for everyone. But as soon as you focus on somebody and they're recognizable on video, you need to get their permission. This will protect you in the long run. You'll find the release forms on our resource page.

What else might get me in trouble?
Beware of copyrighted images. If you are showing brands from companies they get very picky about how their image is being presented and could come after you. If someone is wearing a shirt with a logo on it blur it out or ask him or her to change (if you have that option). Also beware of images in the background. The same goes for photos. Companies that deal with rights managed and royalty free photography have a whole system in place to check who is using their photos so "borrowing" it for your video is not a good idea. If you don't know where the photo has come from don't use it! When you accept our terms you are saying that you understand all of this and that your video is cleared of anything that might get you in trouble. Make sure you understand before you agree.

Does Quantum Shift Media provide help with obtaining music?
Yes! Over the next few months we will be setting up a music database of up-and-coming artists that you will be able to use for your Quantum Shift TV videos. Stay tuned.

Can I use popular music?
No. If you do we can't air your video and no one will see it. Your best bet is to avoid it altogether and search out alternative sources of music - or better yet, create your own!

Do I need licenses to use music?
If you create your own music, or use music from someone who isn't affiliated with a label or publisher that owns 100% of his or her music you will need both a master and synchronization license. You can usually find these forms online and fill in the blanks.
If you are filming someone live you will only need a synchronization license because the music is theirs, they own 100% of the rights and you can use it on air.

What about music recorded in the background of a scene?
Unless you are filming a segment for an artist with a message, and have all the legalities covered for filming them, you should avoid shooting where background music is playing otherwise you will have to take it out and try to clear it. You will need a synchronization license for live performances, one from each performer. You should really just try to avoid it.

I create my own music on my computer - can I use that?
It depends on the software program that you use. It is best to read the license section before recording to see if it says it is okay to use their program for broadcast web use.

Can I use royalty-free music?
Royalty-free music still has a music license and each one is specific to the music so read carefully before using. You need to make sure it is safe to use for television and web use.

What about music under fair use?
You can only use music under fair use in a video if it is specifically about that song or the artist performing it. The video must be about the music or you can't use it and we can't air it .

Can I use public domain music?
Only if it is performed live; meaning you can't use a pre-existing recording of a public domain song. As with all performances you will need a synchronization license signed by the performer.

What version of Flash is required?
As Quantum Shift is fast becoming a leader in online video broadcasting, we need to use some of the latest technology available to be able to present our videos in high quality as well as enabling our viewers to get fast downloads and low wait times for viewing the videos. As such, to get full use of our site, we require that you have the latest version of Adobe Flash, which is currently using Flash 9.

What connection speed is required?
Quantum Shift utilizes a technology that requires a High Speed Internet Connection, such as a Cable Modem or DSL, to get the most out of the site. If you experience any sort of slowness of videos or slow page loads, you should check out a speed test site that will show you where your internet connection should be. We recommend that you have at least 1500 kbps downstream bandwidth available to you to get the most out of Quantum Shift TV. If you wish to upload videos as well, your upstream video should be 150 kpbs minimum or uploading videos to Quantum Shift may take a long time.
We would suggest you use this Speed Test as it is easy to use and it shows everything you need to know graphically. Visit SpeedTest.net to run this test.

How long does it take to upload a video?
Currently Quantum Shift enjoys enough bandwidth to allow each person to upload their videos with a speed of about 30 seconds per MB of data. That would mean that a 50 MB movie would take ~20 minutes to upload on a standard high-speed connection. Remember, we limit the filesize of the videos that are uploaded to 200 MB to ensure that everyone can enjoy the quick load times that Quantum Shift can currently broadcast.

Quantum Shift is currently running a technology that allows our viewers and producers to upload video compressions that are easy to create and small enough in file size that they can be easily uploaded.
Here are a few of the more commonly used video types that can be uploaded to Quantum Shift TV.

How can I export out my contacts to use with Quantum Shift?
Quantum Shift allows you to easily share the video you found on Quantum Shift TV with friends and family. If they are currently members of Quantum Shift, you can easily just choose their name in a list. If they are not yet a member of Quantum Shift, then we have a tool you can use to add friends and family to your Quantum Shift Friends list by importing them from tools and other sites that you already use.
Below are step-by-step instructions on how to import Friends into Quantum Shift easily so you can share Quantum Shift with all your friends and family.
Export Outlook Contacts
- On the File menu, click Import and Export.
- Click Export to a file, and then click Next.
- Click Comma Separated Values (Windows), and then click Next.
- In the folder list, click the Contacts folder, and then click Next.
- Browse to the folder where you want to save the contacts as a .csv file.
- Type a name for the exported file, and then click OK.
- Click Next.
- Click Finish.
- Login to Quantum Shift.
- Click on Add Friends.
- Choose the Outlook Tab.
- Click the Browse button.
- Navigate to the CSV file you just saved.
- Click Open.
- Click Upload.
Export Outlook Express Contacts
- On the File menu, click Export, and then click Address Book.
- Click Text File (Comma Separated Values), and then click Export.
- Type the path and filename of the file, or click Browse to specify a location to save the file.
- Click Next.
- Click the fields that you want to export and then click Finish.
- Login to Quantum Shift.
- Click on Add Friends.
- Choose the Express Tab.
- Click the Browse button.
- Navigate to the CSV file you just saved.
- Click Open.
- Click Upload.
Export Thunder Bird Contacts
- On the Tools Menu, click Address Book.
- Click on the Address Book you wish to export.
- On the Tools Menu, click Export.
- Type the path and filename of the file, and ensure that you choose CSV for file type.
- Click Save.
- Login to Quantum Shift.
- Click on Add Friends.
- Choose the Thunder Bird Tab.
- Click the Browse button.
- Navigate to the CSV file you just saved.
- Click Open.
- Click Upload.
Exporting Yahoo, Gmail, Hotmail, AOL, Lycos, Mail.com, and ICQ Contacts
- Login to Quantum Shift.
- Click on Add Friends.
- Choose the corresponding Service Tab.
- Enter your Username and Password for that service.
- Click Look up Contacts.
