Summary of the article:
In Brevard County, Florida, people living on the east coast are asking their governor to declare a state of emergency. The emergency that these homeowners face is being caused by the tropical storm, “Noel”, and is scraping away large portions of beaches on the coast. 50% of Florida’s beaches are eroding from Noel, and nearly 400 miles of some beaches are actually threatening structures and coastal homes. County officials are trying to urge coastal home owners to contact their Chamber of Commerce so they can possibly replenish the eroded beaches. Property owners on the eroded beaches say that only with government help will they be able to replenish the eroded beaches and reclaim their lost property. Many coastal home owners are depressed and overwhelmed about their predicament with the continuous erosion, and the state of Florida has helped them by spending $580 million to help keep their beaches from washing away.
What I found:
I was clueless when I read this article. It was posted on November 1st, 2007, yet it included a 1986 “Take Care of Our Beaches” act, that said Florida was or had been trying to stop their beaches from eroding in the past. This made me wonder: with all the global warming going on, the Atlantic Ocean heating up warm enough for hurricanes, etc., is it really worth it to spend millions of taxpayer’s money on reconstructing eroding beaches? Global warming will make oceans rise, of course, and that will cause the beaches to erode without any help from tropical storms or hurricanes; which will destroy the beaches at a much, much faster rate. I am really sad by the fact that, even if we reconstruct beaches, they will all eventually come way inland someday! I feel bad for the people who own oceanfront property; their homes will be here today and gone tomorrow at the rate of erosion so far!
