Being The Change, Small Steps
Channel: Environment

At time of writing, I’m currently, about 40 minutes through my flight to Vancouver. I’m currently sitting next to the communal table in my row, on my Boeing 737-600/700 and on the outside seat from me, there is woman, whom was previously just behind me in the check-in line.  Obviously rushed, obviously crazed, obviously not very tidy, not to mention sanitary, and likes to complain to boot. Oh Joy. Ah well, what can I do, people are people and nothing you do can ever change them.  Not to mention that I’m being a hypocrite about this woman, and complaining about her, something I hate more than anything else. I can’t change her opinion of everyone; I can’t change her opinion of the whiny children three rows up.  Nor can I change her opinion o...

A Day At the Pavement Mall
Channel: Environment

It’s a beautiful sunny day in early July.  It’s probably anywhere between 20-30 degrees out, and I’m sitting here in my girlfriends car in front of where she works while I wait for her shift to end.  I’m listening to the new Coldplay album; Viva La Vida. As you can probably surmise, it’s pretty warm in the car, but nothing too unbearable, especially if you can go get some water or something.  Never the less, living in Calgary means that you get this kind of weather a lot.  And I mean, a lot.  In August the temperature can go from nearly 0 degrees (celcius) to 40 in a matter of hours.  We get some pretty wacky weather here, and it only keeps getting wackier, all because of this wonderful thing we like to call “Global Warm...

Congratulations to our Winners!
Channel: Education

Your votes are in! Please join us in giving a hearty round of applause to the winners of the Be the Change! Share the Story! school video contest. The efforts all three of our finalists put into turning out their supporters were so phenomenal it nearly crashed our server. Most importantly, these three schools did an outstanding job of Being the Change they want to see in the world, and Sharing their Stories. All three schools are winners (really!) and will all win prizes. The focus of this message, however, is not the prizes, but the stories of these amazing students. Please take moment to watch their videos (if you haven't yet) and read about what they did to mobilize their communities around the inspiring projects they documented.First Place: McTavish Green Team(visit team page to wa...

Wait, What? Free Internet?
Channel: Business

That's essentially what's it's come down to now hasn't it.  The internet is everywhere, it is accessible everywhere, but for how much longer? Yeah, that's right I'm linking to a YouTube Video, conveniently it's also an embed on our site. Now, Obviously, you should be watching this video, mainly because of the subject it broaches.  If you've gotten past the first 4 minutes or so you will have heard that the internet as we know it will be changing in the next few years.  It will not be the "free" internet as we know now, but the over-advertised, over-monetized, over-capitalized, over-simplified, over-centralized, bland, television store internet you will come to know and love with your undying affections.Or not.Thin...

Contest Vote Totals Adjusted - An Explanation
Channel: Democracy

You may have noticed a significant drop in some of our finalists' vote totals since last night. This is because we made the difficult decision to erase the votes of a large number of user accounts suspected of unfairly gaming our voting system. Here's what happened: Just hours before last night's registration deadline we saw a massive surge in votes and registrations from accounts with bogus email addresses created using services like mailinator.com, temporaryinbox.com, spamspot.com, and others, which allow users to quickly create unlimited numbers of email accounts. These sites are frequently used by spammers and are blacklisted from sending mail to many domains. That's why we decided to delete the votes of user accounts created with such services. While we understand that...

If you've registered - You'll get to vote
Channel: Other

Our sincere apologizes for the issue with public voting. The problem appears to be with our email server. With the overwhelming response our email server became backlogged with emails. Because of this, the server has been sluggishly making its way through over thousands of emails. In light of this issue, we will be extending the voting deadline. This is only an extension for registered users by Friday, May 30 11:59 PM MST that have not voted. These users will now have until Tuesday, 12:00 (NOON) PM MST June 3nd.VOTERS WILL KNOW THEY'VE VOTED FOR SURE IF: the message above the video says "Your Vote Has Been Cast" and the voting buttons are no longer there.

Green Team makes online semifinals News Coverage
Channel: Environment

Great work by the Green Team to get their project out and in the eyes of media in Victoria, BC!It's awesome to see online organization prove to be effective in creating offline action! It was actually the video project for Quantum Shift that helped St. Amand and the Green Team decide their message could reach a wider audience. “At the time, my class had started [recycling] soft plastics, but by making the video, getting inspired by the video, we got the school involved, and before you know it, we started the depot to have a place to bring stuff,” she said.Read the entire article here
